This 3-day chimpanzee trekking safari takes you to Kibale National Park, famously known for its rich population of chimpanzees and diverse primate species. The safari combines chimpanzee trekking with scenic countryside travel, forest experiences, cultural encounters, and relaxation around the beautiful Kibale area.
Kibale National Park is one of Uganda’s most important primate destinations. The forest provides habitat for chimpanzees as well as several species of monkeys and numerous bird species. Chimpanzee tracking is conducted with Uganda Wildlife Authority guides, and visitors can take part in morning or afternoon tracking sessions.
The safari can start from Kampala or Entebbe and can be arranged using private transport with a professional driver-guide. Accommodation can be selected according to the traveler’s preferred budget, including budget, mid-range, or luxury lodges around Kibale.
Your 3-day chimpanzee safari begins with an early morning departure from Kampala or Entebbe. After meeting your driver-guide, you will start the journey westward toward Kibale National Park.
The drive takes you through Uganda’s beautiful countryside, with opportunities to see local communities, farms, trading centers, plantations, rolling hills, and changing landscapes along the way. Your guide can explain different aspects of Uganda’s culture, agriculture, history, and daily life as you travel.
A stop can be made along the way for breakfast or lunch depending on your departure location and preferred travel arrangements. After lunch, you continue toward Fort Portal and eventually the Kibale area.
Fort Portal is surrounded by beautiful scenery, crater lakes, tea plantations, and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Depending on your arrival time, you may have an opportunity to enjoy some of these attractions before continuing to your lodge.
Upon arrival around Kibale National Park, you check into your lodge and have time to relax after the journey. Kibale offers accommodation ranging from budget and community-based options to mid-range and luxury lodges.
In the evening, you can enjoy dinner at the lodge while preparing for the following day’s chimpanzee trekking experience. Your guide will also brief you about the expected schedule and what you should prepare for the forest activity.
Day two is the main highlight of your safari. You wake up early, have breakfast, and prepare for your chimpanzee trekking experience in Kibale National Park.
You will proceed to the designated chimpanzee tracking area, commonly associated with the Kanyanchu sector. Before entering the forest, visitors receive a briefing from the park authorities and guides concerning safety, responsible wildlife viewing, and forest regulations. UWA guidelines provide for chimpanzee tracking sessions beginning at 8:00 a.m. for morning tracking and 2:00 p.m. for afternoon tracking.
After the briefing, you enter the forest with your guide. The trek involves walking through natural forest trails while searching for chimpanzees and observing other wildlife along the way.
Kibale’s forest is home to numerous primates, so the experience may include sightings of species such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and other forest wildlife. Birdwatchers can also enjoy the diversity of bird species found in the park.
Your guide will help you understand the signs of chimpanzee activity, including calls, feeding areas, movement through the trees, and other evidence that can help locate the chimpanzee community.
When the chimpanzees are located, you will have the opportunity to observe them in their natural environment. Under the current UWA guidelines, normal chimpanzee tracking allows a maximum of one hour of viewing once the chimpanzees are encountered.
During the encounter, you may observe chimpanzees moving through the forest, feeding, communicating, grooming, resting, or interacting with members of their community. Your guide will explain their behavior while ensuring that visitors follow the required wildlife-viewing rules.
After the chimpanzee encounter, you continue walking through the forest before returning to the starting point. The duration of the entire trek can vary depending on the location and movement of the chimpanzee community.
Once you return from the forest, you have lunch and time to relax at the lodge.
In the afternoon, you can add a visit to the Bigodi Wetland area. This experience provides an opportunity to explore the community surrounding Kibale and learn about local livelihoods, culture, agriculture, and conservation.
The area is particularly interesting for birdwatching and nature walks, and local guides can provide information about the relationship between tourism, forest conservation, and surrounding communities.
Alternatively, travelers who prefer a quieter afternoon can relax at the lodge and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
Wake up early on your final day and enjoy breakfast at the lodge. Depending on your departure time, you may take a short nature walk or enjoy the surroundings before beginning your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.
For travelers interested in experiencing more of Kibale, a guided forest or nature activity can be arranged. Kibale provides opportunities to encounter several primate species and a variety of forest birds.
After the morning activity, return to the lodge, check out, and begin your journey back toward Kampala or Entebbe.
The return journey provides another opportunity to enjoy Uganda’s countryside. You can stop for lunch along the way before continuing to your final destination.
Depending on your schedule, the safari can end in Kampala or at Entebbe International Airport for travelers connecting to another destination.
