Short Gorilla Safaris in Uganda Starting from Kigali

Short Gorilla Safaris in Uganda Starting from Kigali

Short Gorilla Safaris in Uganda Starting from Kigali are the fastest and most affordable way to meet mountain gorillas in the wild. Kigali International Airport sits only four to five hours by road from southern Bwindi, so you can trek gorillas in Uganda and be back in Rwanda within one to three days. This guide covers the best short itineraries, border crossing tips, permit costs for 2026 and practical advice for planning your trip.

At Uganda Safari Holidays, we run Kigali-to-Bwindi gorilla safaris every week of the year. We handle permits, border paperwork, transport and lodges, so all you need to do is land in Kigali and enjoy the adventure.

Why Start Your Uganda Gorilla Safari in Kigali

Kigali is closer to Uganda’s gorilla parks than Uganda’s own international airport at Entebbe. The drive from Entebbe to southern Bwindi takes eight to ten hours, while the drive from Kigali takes about half that time. For travellers with only a few days, starting in Kigali turns a long road journey into a comfortable half-day drive.

The second reason is cost. A Uganda gorilla permit costs US$800, compared with US$1,500 for a permit in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. By flying into Kigali and trekking in Uganda, you get Rwanda’s convenient access and Uganda’s lower permit price on the same trip.

Kigali itself is also a pleasant place to begin or end a safari. The city is clean, safe and well connected, with direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and across Africa. Many travellers add a half-day city tour or a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial before or after their trek. Learn more about the region on this Rwanda safaris page.

Kigali vs Entebbe: Which Is Better for a Short Gorilla Safari?

Kigali, RwandaAbout 4–5 hoursAbout 7–8 hours1–3 day gorilla trips, Rwanda combos
Entebbe, UgandaAbout 8–10 hoursAbout 9–10 hoursLonger safaris with Queen Elizabeth and Kibale

If you have three days or fewer, Kigali is almost always the better choice. If you have a week or more and want chimpanzees and savannah wildlife too, Entebbe works well. To get the best of both, try our 6-Day Rwanda–Uganda Gorilla, Wildlife and Chimpanzee Safari.

Best Short Gorilla Safari Itineraries from Kigali

You can choose a one-day, two-day or three-day gorilla safari from Kigali, depending on your time and pace. Each option uses the southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which are closest to the Rwanda border.

1 Day Uganda Gorilla Trek from Kigali

The one-day trip is the quickest way to see gorillas from Rwanda. Your guide picks you up from your Kigali hotel at around 2:00 am for the drive to the Cyanika or Katuna border. You arrive at the Rushaga or Mgahinga trailhead in time for the 7:30 am ranger briefing.

After your trek and one hour with the gorillas, you enjoy a late lunch and drive back to Kigali, arriving in the evening. It is a long day, but perfect if you have limited time. Book it as our 1 Day Uganda Gorilla Trek from Kigali.

2 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari from Kigali

The two-day safari is our most popular short option because it removes the very early start.

  • Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi. Leave Kigali after breakfast and drive through Rwanda’s green hills to the border. Complete formalities and continue to your lodge in Rushaga, arriving in the afternoon. Relax and enjoy the forest views.
  • Day 2: Gorilla trekking and return. After an early breakfast, attend the briefing and trek to your assigned gorilla family. Spend one magical hour with them, then drive back to Kigali in the afternoon.

You can compare this route with the 2 days Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali and the 2 days Rwanda to Uganda gorilla trekking safari.

3 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari from Kigali

The three-day safari adds a rest day so you never feel rushed.

  • Day 1: Kigali to Bwindi. Drive to Rushaga or Nkuringo and check in to your lodge.
  • Day 2: Gorilla trekking. Spend the full morning trekking and the afternoon on a Batwa cultural walk or a village visit.
  • Day 3: Lake Bunyonyi and return. Enjoy a morning canoe ride on Lake Bunyonyi, then return to Kigali.

For a fixed version of this route, see the 3 days Bwindi gorilla safari starting from Kigali. If you would like chimpanzees as well, our 3 Days Gorilla and Chimps Trekking Safari from Kigali adds chimpanzee tracking to the trip.

Crossing the Border from Rwanda to Uganda

Most short gorilla safaris from Kigali cross into Uganda at one of two border posts. Your guide handles the stop, which usually takes 30 minutes to an hour.

  • Cyanika border: the closest route to Kisoro, Mgahinga and the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi. It passes through Musanze, with views of the Virunga volcanoes.
  • Katuna (Gatuna) border: the main highway crossing toward Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi. It suits routes to Rushaga via Kabale and onward trips into Uganda.

Borders are generally open from early morning to late evening. On the one-day trek, your guide plans the timing so you cross as soon as the post opens.

Visa Requirements for Uganda Gorilla Safaris from Kigali

You will need valid visas for both Rwanda and Uganda. The easiest option for most travellers is the East Africa Tourist Visa, which costs US$100. It allows multiple entries between Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya for 90 days.

Apply online before travel, and make sure your first entry is into the country that issued the visa. If you prefer separate visas, Uganda offers a single-entry e-visa, and many nationalities can get a Rwanda visa on arrival. Always check the latest rules for your nationality before you fly.

You also need a passport valid for at least six months and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Carry printed copies of your visas and permit details in case the network at the border is slow.

Which Gorilla Park Is Best from Kigali?

The southern side of Uganda’s gorilla region is the natural choice for Kigali departures.

Park or sectorDrive from KigaliHighlights
Mgahinga Gorilla National ParkAbout 3–4 hoursOne gorilla family, golden monkeys, volcano hikes
Bwindi – Rushaga sectorAbout 4–5 hoursMost gorilla families, habituation experience
Bwindi – Nkuringo sectorAbout 4–5 hoursRidge-top views, more challenging treks
Bwindi – Buhoma sectorAbout 7–8 hoursBest for longer trips with Queen Elizabeth

Rushaga is usually our first choice because it has the most permits available, which makes last-minute bookings easier. Mgahinga is a great backup and also offers golden monkey tracking. If you want both, consider this 4-day Rwanda–Uganda golden monkey and gorilla trekking trip. Read more about Uganda’s gorilla trekking experience.

Uganda vs Rwanda Gorilla Permit Costs in 2026

The permit price is the main reason so many travellers fly into Kigali but trek in Uganda. A Uganda gorilla permit costs less than half of a Rwanda permit for the same one-hour encounter.

PermitUganda (foreign non-resident)Rwanda (foreign visitor)
Standard gorilla trekking (1 hour)US$800US$1,500
Low season (April, May, November)US$600 (reported)No low-season rate
Gorilla habituation (up to 4 hours)From US$1,500Not offered

For a couple, choosing Uganda saves at least US$1,400 on permits alone. Uganda permits for foreign non-residents must be booked through a licensed Ugandan tour operator, and rates are revised from time to time, so we always confirm the current tariff in your quote.

If you still want to trek in Rwanda, this 3 days Rwanda gorilla safari is a good option. For two treks in two countries, see the 5 days Uganda Rwanda double gorilla safari.

How Much Does a Short Gorilla Safari from Kigali Cost?

The total price depends on the number of days, your lodge level and how many people share the vehicle. As a guide, prices per person sharing for a private trip are:

TripApproximate price per person (2 people sharing)
1 day gorilla trek from KigaliFrom about US$1,280
2 days gorilla safari from KigaliFrom about US$1,500
3 days gorilla safari from KigaliFrom about US$1,650

Prices usually include the gorilla permit, a private 4×4 vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, fuel, accommodation, meals as listed and bottled water. They usually exclude visas, porters, tips, drinks and personal expenses. Solo travellers pay a little more because the vehicle cost is not shared. See all current prices on our safari packages page.

Best Time for a Short Gorilla Safari from Kigali

Gorilla trekking runs throughout the year, so you can travel from Kigali in any month. The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer firmer trails and are the most popular. Book early for these months, as permits and lodges near Rushaga fill fast.

The wet months of March to May and October to November bring lush forest, fewer visitors and lower low-season permit prices. Rain usually comes in short showers, so treks still go ahead. Whatever the season, pack a rain jacket, because the mountains around Bwindi and the Virungas can be wet at any time.

Where to Stay on a Short Gorilla Safari from Kigali

On two- and three-day trips, you stay near the trailhead so that trekking morning starts calmly. We recommend lodges in the same sector as your permit.

What to Pack for Your Short Gorilla Safari

Short trips mean light luggage, so pack only what you need for the forest.

  • Waterproof hiking boots with strong grip
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts in neutral colours
  • A light rain jacket and a warm layer for early mornings
  • Garden gloves for gripping branches and vines
  • A small daypack with two litres of water and snacks
  • Insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat
  • A camera without flash, plus spare batteries
  • Your passport, visas, yellow fever certificate and permit details
  • Some US dollars in small notes for porters and tips

Travel Tips for a Smooth Kigali to Uganda Gorilla Trip

  • Book permits first. Permits in Rushaga sell out months ahead in peak season, so secure them before booking flights.
  • Arrive the day before. For a one-day trek, land in Kigali at least one night before your trip.
  • Hire a porter. For about US$20 to US$25, a porter carries your bag and helps on steep slopes while supporting local families.
  • Stay healthy. You cannot trek with a cold or flu, as gorillas can catch human illnesses.
  • Respect the rules. You must be 15 or older, and you stay about seven metres from the gorillas.
  • Bring cash. Card payments are limited near the parks, so carry US dollars printed after 2013.
