Why Choose a 3 Days Chimpanzee Trekking Tour in Kibale?
Three days is the ideal length for a chimpanzee trekking holiday in Kibale. It gives you time to travel comfortably from Kampala or Entebbe, enjoy a full chimpanzee trek at the best time of day, and explore the other highlights of the area, such as Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary and the crater lakes of Fort Portal, without rushing.
A three-day Kibale tour is perfect if you:
- Have a long weekend or a few days free in Uganda
- Want a primate experience without the higher cost of a gorilla permit
- Are travelling with children aged 12 to 14, who are too young for gorilla trekking but can join chimpanzee tracking
- Want to add a primate experience to a longer safari or business trip
- Love forests, birds, butterflies and scenic landscapes as much as wildlife
Kibale National Park: The Primate Capital of the World
Kibale National Park lies in western Uganda, near the town of Fort Portal, at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains. Covering about 795 square kilometres of moist evergreen forest, grassland and swamp, it is one of the most beautiful and biodiverse forests in East Africa. Kibale is often called the primate capital of the world because it protects around 13 primate species, one of the highest concentrations of primates anywhere on Earth.
The park is home to roughly 1,500 chimpanzees, Uganda’s largest population, along with red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, olive baboons and nocturnal primates such as bushbabies and pottos. More than 350 bird species have been recorded, including the green-breasted pitta, one of Africa’s most sought-after birds, and the forest also shelters forest elephants, buffalo, bushbucks, duikers and an extraordinary variety of butterflies.

3 Days Chimpanzee Trekking Tour Itinerary at a Glance
- Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe to Fort Portal and Kibale, with an afternoon crater lakes walk.
- Day 2: Morning chimpanzee trekking in Kibale and an afternoon Bigodi Wetland walk.
- Day 3: Optional morning activity around Fort Portal, then return to Kampala or Entebbe.
Day 1: Kampala to Kibale National Park and the Crater Lakes
Morning departure. Your Uganda Safari Holidays driver-guide picks you up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe in a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof. After a short briefing, you head west on the Kampala–Fort Portal highway, a scenic drive of around five to six hours through banana plantations, papyrus swamps, rolling farmland and tea estates. On clear days, the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains appear on the horizon as you approach Fort Portal.
Lunch in Fort Portal. Stop for lunch in Fort Portal, one of Uganda’s most attractive towns and the capital of the Tooro Kingdom. The town sits among green hills dotted with tea plantations, with the Rwenzoris rising behind.
Afternoon crater lakes walk. After checking in at your lodge, enjoy a gentle walk or drive through the Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes area, where dozens of emerald lakes fill ancient volcanic craters. The Top of the World viewpoint offers views over several crater lakes at once, with the Rwenzoris in the distance. It is a beautiful introduction to the region and a relaxing way to stretch your legs after the drive. Some lakes are safe for swimming or canoeing, and the surrounding villages offer a glimpse of everyday rural life in the Tooro region. Read Kenlink Tours’ guide to the crater lakes in Fort Portal.
Evening. Return to your lodge for dinner and an early night in preparation for chimpanzee trekking. Your guide will brief you on what to wear and pack for the next morning, so everything is ready for an early start.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
Early breakfast. After an early breakfast, your guide drives you to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, the starting point for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale.
Briefing. At around 7:30 to 8:00 am, Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers give a briefing on the chimpanzees, the trekking rules and safety guidelines. Visitors are divided into small groups, each led by an experienced ranger guide.
Chimpanzee trekking. You enter the forest, following trails beneath towering trees as your guide listens for calls and looks for signs of chimpanzee activity, such as fresh feeding remains and knuckle prints. Trekking can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are feeding. When you find them, you spend one unforgettable hour watching them. You might see a dominant male displaying, mothers carrying infants on their backs or bellies, youngsters swinging and playing, or the whole group feasting in a fig tree. Chimpanzees move quickly between the canopy and the ground, so be ready to follow your guide through the undergrowth.
Along the way, you may also see other primates, such as red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys, along with colourful birds and butterflies. Kenlink Tours explains what time chimpanzee trekking starts in Kibale and the differences between morning and afternoon chimpanzee tracking.
Lunch. Return to your lodge for lunch and a rest.
Afternoon at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run swamp on the edge of Kibale. The boardwalk trail winds through papyrus and forest, offering excellent birding, with species such as the great blue turaco, papyrus gonolek, black-and-white casqued hornbill and many kingfishers, as well as primates including red colobus, black-and-white colobus and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Fees from the walk support local schools and community projects. Read Kenlink Tours’ guide to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
Evening cultural option. For a fun cultural experience, ask about a community visit in Bigodi, where local families share how they grow, cook and brew with bananas. Kenlink Tours describes the Rest in Banana experience in Bigodi.
Day 3: Fort Portal Morning and Return to Kampala
Optional morning activity. After breakfast, you can choose a short activity before the drive home. Options include a guided nature walk in Kibale Forest, a visit to a tea estate to learn how Uganda’s famous tea is grown and processed, a stop at the Tooro Kingdom palace on a hill overlooking Fort Portal, or a visit to the Amabere caves with their waterfall and stalactites. Kenlink Tours describes a nature walk in Kibale Forest National Park.
Return journey. Check out of your lodge and drive back to Kampala or Entebbe, with a lunch stop on the way, arriving in the evening and ending your 3 days chimpanzee trekking tour in Kibale National Park.
A Day in the Life of a Kibale Chimpanzee
Understanding how chimpanzees spend their day makes your trek even more rewarding. Chimpanzees live in communities of up to around 100 individuals, but they spend much of their time in smaller, shifting groups, a system known as fission-fusion. Each evening, every adult builds a fresh nest of leaves and branches high in the trees, and at dawn they climb down to begin searching for food.
Mornings are usually spent feeding, especially on ripe figs and other fruits, which make up most of their diet. They also eat leaves, flowers, seeds, insects and, occasionally, meat from hunting monkeys such as red colobus. As the day warms up, chimpanzees rest, groom one another and play, with youngsters wrestling and swinging through the branches while adults relax. Grooming is an important social activity that strengthens bonds within the group. Loud pant-hoots, screams and drumming on tree buttresses allow chimpanzees to communicate across the forest, and these calls often lead trekkers straight to them.
Chimpanzees share around 98 percent of their DNA with humans, and watching their tool use, facial expressions and complex social relationships is a fascinating reminder of how closely related we are.
Meet Kibale’s Other Primates
While chimpanzees are the stars, Kibale’s other primates make every walk exciting:
- Red colobus: Kibale holds one of the most important populations of this endangered monkey, often seen in noisy groups high in the canopy.
- Black-and-white colobus: Elegant monkeys with long white tails, often seen leaping between trees.
- L’Hoest’s monkey: A shy, ground-loving monkey with a distinctive white beard.
- Grey-cheeked mangabey: A dark, shaggy monkey found mainly in the canopy, a special find in Uganda.
- Red-tailed and blue monkeys: Common and active, often seen feeding on fruit.
- Olive baboons: Usually seen near the forest edge and along roads.
- Nocturnal primates: Bushbabies and pottos, which can be seen on guided night walks.
Birds and Butterflies of Kibale
Kibale is a superb destination for birdwatchers, with more than 350 recorded species. The most famous is the green-breasted pitta, a colourful, secretive bird that attracts birders from around the world. Other highlights include the great blue turaco, African grey parrot, black bee-eater, yellow-spotted barbet, white-naped pigeon and several species of hornbills and greenbuls. Bigodi Wetland adds swamp species such as the papyrus gonolek and white-winged warbler.
The forest is also alive with butterflies, with hundreds of species recorded, including brilliant swallowtails and forest charaxes that gather near streams and puddles. Even travellers who come mainly for chimpanzees often find the birds and butterflies a memorable bonus.
Upgrade Option: The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience
For travellers who want more time with the chimpanzees, Kibale offers the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. Instead of a standard one-hour visit, you join researchers and habituators for a full day following a chimpanzee community that is still becoming used to humans. You may start before dawn, as the chimpanzees leave their nests, and stay with them until they build new nests in the evening, observing feeding, grooming, hunting, social conflicts and play. It is ideal for photographers, researchers and serious primate lovers.
On a three-day tour, the habituation experience can replace standard trekking on day two. Because permits are limited, book well in advance. Read Kenlink Tours’ guide to the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale National Park.
Chimpanzee Trekking Permits in Kibale
Every visitor needs a chimpanzee trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Kibale permits are more expensive than those at other chimpanzee sites because of their high success rates and popularity. For foreign non-residents, the Kibale chimpanzee permit currently costs around USD 250, with reduced low-season rates in April, May and November, and lower prices for foreign residents and East African citizens. Under the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s new tariffs, the rate is set to rise from January 2027, so we always confirm the exact price for your travel dates when booking. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience costs more than standard trekking.
Permits are limited and can sell out in the busy months of June to September and December to February, so we recommend booking at least one to three months in advance. Read Kenlink Tours’ guide to booking a chimpanzee permit in Uganda and the reduced low-season gorilla and chimpanzee permits.
Chimpanzee Trekking Rules in Kibale
To protect both chimpanzees and visitors, the Uganda Wildlife Authority sets clear rules:
- The minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 12 years.
- Groups are kept small, and time with the chimpanzees is limited to one hour on a standard trek.
- Keep a distance of at least eight metres from the chimpanzees where possible.
- Do not trek if you have a cold, flu or other contagious illness, as chimpanzees can catch human diseases.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke near the chimpanzees.
- Flash photography is not allowed.
- Keep your voice low and stay with your group.
- If a chimpanzee approaches or displays, stay calm and follow your ranger’s instructions.
Best Time for a Chimpanzee Trekking Tour in Kibale
Chimpanzee trekking takes place throughout the year, so you can enjoy a three-day Kibale tour in any month. The drier months from June to September and December to February usually offer firmer trails and easier walking, making them the most popular times to visit. The wetter months, from March to May and October to November, bring lush green forest, fewer visitors and discounted permits in April, May and November. Fruit is often more abundant in the rainy months, which can keep chimpanzees feeding in predictable areas.
Morning treks are generally recommended, as chimpanzees are often most active early in the day, and a morning start leaves the afternoon free for Bigodi Wetland or other activities.

How Much Does a 3 Days Chimpanzee Trekking Tour Cost?
The cost of a three-day Kibale tour depends on your choice of lodge, the number of travellers, the season and whether you choose standard trekking or the habituation experience. The chimpanzee permit and accommodation are usually the largest costs, while vehicle and guide costs are shared among the group, so the price per person falls noticeably for groups of two to four. Our 3 Days Chimp Trekking Safaris in Kibale package is listed from USD 800, depending on lodge and group size. Contact us for an up-to-date quote for your dates.
Getting to Kibale National Park
Kibale is about 300 kilometres west of Kampala, a drive of around five to six hours on a good tarmac road via Mubende and Fort Portal. Most travellers drive, enjoying the scenery and stops along the way. For travellers short on time, domestic and charter flights to Kasese airstrip or the Fort Portal area are also possible, followed by a short road transfer to the park. If you prefer to arrive from Queen Elizabeth National Park, the drive takes around two to three hours.
What to Pack for Chimpanzee Trekking
- Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip
- Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts to protect against nettles, thorns and insects
- A lightweight rain jacket
- Insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat
- A camera with a fast lens for low-light forest conditions (no flash)
- Binoculars for chimpanzees and birds in the canopy
- Water, snacks and a small daypack
- Gardening gloves for gripping branches
- Passport, permit details and some cash for tips and crafts
Gorillas vs Chimpanzees: Which Should You Choose?
Many travellers wonder whether to choose gorilla trekking or chimpanzee trekking. Gorilla encounters are calm and intimate, with families often resting or feeding quietly on the forest floor. Chimpanzee encounters are lively and energetic, with loud calls, fast movement and dramatic social behaviour. Chimpanzee trekking is also more affordable and open to younger travellers. Ideally, do both. Read Kenlink Tours’ comparison of gorillas vs chimpanzees, and explore our gorilla trekking experiences.
Extending Your Kibale Chimpanzee Tour
Kibale fits perfectly into longer Uganda safaris. Popular extensions include:

- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Mountain gorilla trekking. Discover Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
- Semuliki National Park: World-class birding and hot springs, about an hour from Fort Portal. Read Kenlink Tours’ guide to why Semuliki is best for birding trips in Uganda.

Shorter Options: Two Days in Kibale
If you have less time, a two-day chimpanzee tour is also possible, with travel and Bigodi Wetland on day one and chimpanzee trekking followed by the drive home on day two. It is a full but rewarding trip. Kenlink Tours describes a two days chimpanzee tour in Uganda. For gorillas and chimps together in a short time, see our 3 Days Gorilla and Chimps Trekking Safari from Kigali.
Chimpanzee Trekking with Children and Families
Because the minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 12 years, a Kibale tour is an excellent primate experience for families with younger teenagers. Children usually love the noise and energy of the chimpanzees, the boardwalk at Bigodi and the crater lakes. Treks are generally shorter and less strenuous than gorilla treks, but involve walking on uneven forest trails, so comfortable shoes and a reasonable level of fitness help. For family travel ideas, see our guide to Uganda safari holiday vacations.
Photography Tips for Chimpanzee Trekking
Photographing chimpanzees can be challenging but very rewarding. The forest is often dark under the canopy, so use a higher ISO and a fast shutter speed to freeze movement. A lens in the 70 to 200 mm range is versatile, as chimpanzees may be close on the ground or high in the trees. Bring spare batteries and memory cards, keep your camera protected from rain, and be ready to move quickly with the group. Most importantly, take time to put the camera down and simply watch.
Responsible Chimpanzee Trekking
Chimpanzees are endangered, and responsible tourism plays a vital role in their protection. Permit fees fund ranger patrols, research and community projects around Kibale. You can help by following park rules, never trekking when sick, staying with your group and keeping your distance. Supporting community initiatives such as Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, buying local crafts and staying at community-run lodges helps ensure that local people benefit from conservation.
Health and Safety Tips for Your Kibale Tour
Uganda is a welcoming and safe destination, and chimpanzee treks are led by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. A few health tips help keep you and the chimpanzees safe. A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda, and malaria precautions are recommended, so speak to a travel clinic before you go. Stay healthy in the days before your trek, as visitors with colds or flu may not be allowed to trek. Drink plenty of water, wear insect repellent and long sleeves in the forest, and carry any personal medication you need. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended.
