Gorilla Trekking Safaris to Bwindi National Park

gorilla-trekking-safaris-to-bwindi-national-park

Gorilla Trekking Safaris to Bwindi National Park offer the world’s most reliable chance to meet endangered mountain gorillas in the wild. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda is home to almost half of the planet’s remaining mountain gorillas, with more habituated families than anywhere else. This guide explains everything you need for a successful trek: the four trekking sectors, permit costs for 2026, the best time to go, where to stay and what to expect on the day.

At Uganda Safari Holidays, gorilla trekking is our speciality. We book permits, choose the right sector for your route and guide you from arrival to that unforgettable first look at a silverback.

About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers about 331 square kilometers of ancient montane and lowland rainforest on the edge of the Albertine Rift. Its name comes from the dense undergrowth of ferns, vines and bamboo that cover its steep ridges and valleys. UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1994 for its outstanding biodiversity.

Beyond gorillas, Bwindi shelters around 120 mammal species, including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys and forest elephants. Birders come for more than 350 bird species, among them 23 Albertine Rift endemics such as the African green broadbill. The forest is also the ancestral home of the Batwa people, whose culture you can experience on a community walk.

The park sits close to the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. That location makes Bwindi easy to combine with other parks in Uganda or with a short trip into Rwanda. For a wider look at the country, see this guide to Uganda.

Why Choose Bwindi for Your Gorilla Trekking Safari

Bwindi offers more gorilla permits per day than any other park in Africa. More than 20 habituated families are spread across four trekking sectors, which means better permit availability and more flexibility for your dates. Each family can be visited by a maximum of eight people per day, keeping every encounter calm and personal.

Uganda is also the best-value gorilla destination. A Uganda gorilla permit costs US$800, compared with US$1,500 in Rwanda, so your budget stretches further on lodges and other experiences. You can see the gorillas in Bwindi and then add savannah wildlife, chimpanzees or lakes on the same trip.

Finally, Bwindi suits many travel styles. Choose a quick gorilla trekking trip, a longer primate safari, or the rare four-hour habituation experience found only in Uganda. There is also the neighbouring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which offers a single habituated family and golden monkeys.

The Four Gorilla Trekking Sectors in Bwindi

Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors, each with its own trailhead, gorilla families and lodges. Your permit is issued for one sector, so choosing the right one shapes your route, drive times and accommodation.

SectorLocationHabituated families (examples)Best for
BuhomaNorthMubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, KatweCombining with Queen Elizabeth and Ishasha

RushagaSouthNshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Bweza, BusingyeMost permits, habituation, trips from Kigali
NkuringoSouth-westNkuringo, Bushaho, ChristmasDramatic views and more challenging hikes

Buhoma Sector

Buhoma is where gorilla tourism in Uganda began, when the Mubare family opened to visitors in 1993. It has the widest range of lodges and is the easiest sector to reach from Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Kihihi airstrip. Treks here are often moderate, and the village walk to local waterfalls and craft shops is a highlight.

Ruhija Sector

Ruhija sits at about 2,300 metres in the eastern highlands, making it the coolest and highest sector. It is famous for birding, including the trail down to the Mubwindi Swamp. Fewer lodges mean quieter trails and a more remote, wild feel.

Rushaga Sector

Rushaga in the south has the largest number of habituated families and is the only sector offering the gorilla habituation experience. It is also the closest sector to Kigali, about four to five hours away by road. This makes it the top choice for short trips such as this 3 days Bwindi gorilla safari starting from Kigali.

Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo sits on a high ridge with spectacular views over the Virunga volcanoes. Treks often start with a steep descent into the forest, which means a demanding climb back out. It suits fit hikers who want epic scenery, and it is close to the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi.

Not sure which sector suits you? Tell us your route and fitness level when you contact us, and we will match you to the best family available.

What to Expect on Gorilla Trekking Day in Bwindi

A gorilla trekking day follows a clear routine, from an early briefing to a full hour with the gorillas. Knowing each step helps you relax and enjoy the experience.

  1. Early breakfast and transfer. Your guide picks you up from the lodge after an early breakfast with a packed lunch. You arrive at the sector headquarters by around 7:30 am.
  2. Ranger briefing. UWA rangers explain the rules, introduce the gorilla families and assign groups of up to eight trekkers. Cultural dancers often welcome visitors with songs while you wait.
  3. Hiring a porter. Porters wait at the trailhead to carry your bag and help on slippery slopes. At around US$20 to US$25, a porter is a small cost that supports local families and makes the hike easier.
  4. The trek. Advance trackers set out at dawn to find the family from where it nested the night before. Depending on its location, your walk can take from one to six hours over steep, muddy ground.
  5. Your hour with the gorillas. Once you reach the family, you put down your bags and spend one hour watching them feed, rest and play. You stay about seven metres away, and your guide explains each gorilla’s role in the group.
  6. Return and certificate. After the hike back, you receive a gorilla trekking certificate at the headquarters to celebrate your achievement.

The hour passes fast. Many travellers say that watching a 200-kilogram silverback gently groom an infant is the most moving wildlife moment of their lives.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga

The gorilla habituation experience lets you spend up to four hours with a family that is still being trained to accept human presence. You join researchers and trackers as they follow the gorillas, learning about their behaviour, diet and social structure. Groups are limited to four visitors per day, so the encounter feels exclusive.

The habituation permit costs from US$1,500 per person and is only available in the Rushaga sector. It is ideal for photographers, researchers and anyone who wants more time than the standard one hour. Book well ahead, as permits are very limited.

If you would like to see both gorillas and chimpanzees, the 3 Days Gorilla and Chimps Trekking Safari from Kigali and our chimpanzee tracking trips are good places to start. For a longer primate journey, compare the 5 days chimps and gorilla safari.

Bwindi Gorilla Permit Costs for 2026

A standard gorilla trekking permit in Bwindi costs US$800 per person for foreign non-residents. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and foreign non-residents must now book them through a licensed Ugandan tour operator.

Permit typeForeign non-residentForeign resident
Gorilla trekking (1 hour)US$800US$700
Low-season gorilla trekking (April, May, November)US$600US$500
Gorilla habituation experience (up to 4 hours, Rushaga)From US$1,500From US$1,000

The permit covers park entry for the day, the ranger-guided trek and your hour with the gorillas. It does not include transport, accommodation, porters or tips. Rates are revised from time to time, so we always confirm the current tariff when we quote.

Permits for June to September and December often sell out four to six months ahead. Secure yours as soon as your dates are fixed, and we will build the rest of the safari around it. See our current safari packages for all-inclusive prices.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi runs every day of the year. The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the most popular, because trails are firmer and the hike is less slippery. These months are also busiest, so permits and lodges fill early.

The wet seasons from March to May and October to November bring more rain, but also fewer visitors, greener forest and discounted low-season permits. Gorillas often stay in lower areas when food is plentiful, which can mean shorter treks. Rain usually falls in short bursts, so a good jacket keeps you comfortable.

Bwindi is a rainforest, so expect showers at any time of year. Temperatures are pleasant, ranging from about 7°C at night to 20°C during the day.

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You can reach Bwindi by road or by air, depending on your time and budget.

  • By road from Kampala or Entebbe: about eight to ten hours. Most safaris break the trip with a night in Queen Elizabeth or at Lake Mburo National Park.
  • By road from Kigali: about four to five hours to Rushaga or Nkuringo via the Katuna or Cyanika borders. This is the fastest overland route.
  • By air: scheduled flights from Entebbe to Kihihi (for Buhoma) or Kisoro (for Rushaga and Nkuringo) take about one to two hours.

If you start in Rwanda, our 1 Day Uganda Gorilla Trek from Kigali is the quickest option. You can also compare the 2 days Uganda gorilla safari starting from Kigali. Travellers who prefer to drive themselves can arrange a 4×4 through this Uganda car hire service.

Where to Stay on a Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Safari

Always stay in the same sector as your permit, because the briefing starts early and roads between sectors can take several hours. Each sector has lodges for every budget.

Gorilla Trekking Rules and Fitness Tips

Mountain gorillas share about 98 percent of our DNA and can catch human illnesses. Rangers enforce rules that protect them and keep you safe.

  • You must be at least 15 years old to trek
  • Do not trek if you are sick with a cold, flu or cough
  • Keep about seven metres from the gorillas
  • Speak softly and avoid sudden movements or pointing
  • Do not eat, drink or smoke near the gorillas
  • Wear a mask when the ranger asks
  • Follow your guide if a gorilla approaches, and stay calm

You do not need to be an athlete, but regular walking or hiking in the weeks before your trip helps. Tell us about any mobility needs, and we can request a family closer to the trailhead or arrange a sedan chair carried by porters.
